If you’re sourcing 50+ units per quarter for a spa or hotel program: The in-store refill station or bulk-format option (where available) is the only model that delivers meaningful waste reduction at scale. Pouch-based refills at volume still generate significant plastic waste; they’re better than standard repurchase, but not dramatically so. Verify directly with the brand or authorized retailer whether take-back or in-store refill is available at your point of purchase — these programs aren’t always consistently available across all distribution channels, and availability has shifted across 2025–2026 as brands have adjusted their retail footprint.

Packaging sustainability claims exist on a spectrum from “documented, third-party verified, and mechanically accessible” to “aspirational marketing language.” Here’s the clean if/then for making the call:
